Ejected from the fast track of summer to the dreary rut of routine
The most popular response to ‘how was your summer?’ is ‘it went way to damn fast’… I get so depressed with the reality summer is over and the next 6 months will bring the dreariness of winter, routine and the endless chore of keeping up with the kids… this is why I plan a vacation at least once through the winter months if we can afford it even if it is to a nearby cabin or weekend away. I also plan theme weekends where we will set up the tent downstairs and do sand art in memory of summers at the beach or we will do a movie marathon of only summer movies. One weekend we did a palm tree and brought in some sand from the outdoor sandbox and made a beach. There are endless tips on the internet for activities such as spraying the snow with spray bottles filled with colored water. The deary school year is also the time to start planning for next summer’s vacation plans. Set the kids a goal to achieve throughout the school year and incorporate it in the summer vacation plans either promising a bonus or if planning a trip somewhere have the kids do some homework on what the people, customs and area is like. The trick is imagination. Don’t just turn the car to follow that same rut, occasionally you have to rebel and crank the steering wheel to a hard right or left and in a new and surprising direction.
